When St. John's School was established in 1858, it was housed in a tiny, two-part wooden building. The Head Mistress lived in one half, which served as the "school house," and the students utilised the other half.
St. John's National School, Clay Hill was its previous name.
A new school building's construction started in 1888 and was finished in 1889.
According to the school's attendance registration, there were 38 infants and 50 seniors enrolled in 1899.
The school had two teachers and between 30 and 40 students when it was described in 1961.
At the back of the building was a sizable school field, and in front of the building, facing Theobalds Park Road, was a playground.
The school was expanded in 1968, and by 1971 it had 54 juniors and babies.
The nearby parish hall was purchased and is now used as the school hall after additional additions to the original school building were made.
