One of the nation's oldest schools, St. Mary's Church of England Primary School turned 450 years old in 2013. Our earliest students, who ranged in age, were accommodated in a schoolhouse that was constructed alongside Old St. Mary's Church in 1563. The school then relocated to the opposite end of Church Street before making a final shift to its present location in Barn Street in 1866. St. Mary's established a primary school in 1945. The school's older students were transferred to Church Street Secondary School, which is now William Pattern Primary School. St Mary's obtained more land to expand the school along Barn Street when several stores and homes on Barn Street were demolished in 1980. The school's Nursery facility was opened in 2000, allowing it to accept students from 3 to 11 years old. A Shakespeare-themed musical and the creation of the school's stained glass window were just two of the events that took place in 2013 as the school community commemorated its 450-year history. The upcoming 450 years of educating our community will be exciting.
